What is a "Traveler"?

A Traveler is a healthcare professional that contracts with a staffing agency to provide patient care in their trained specialty at the destination of their choosing. Contracts are for a designated length of time, usually 3 months at a designated facility.

Why would I want to work as a Traveler?

The reasons to work as a travel nurse vary by individual. Here are a few common motivators.

See the Country!
Travelers have the best of both worlds: they get to experience life in new locations of their choosing while remaining engaged in their career and earning top pay.  Living in a new locale can provide a perspective and set of opportunities that visiting as a tourist can’t.  You get to know the nuances of the location and all it has to offer as a resident rather than a tourist.

Meet New People!
Working in a new location exposes you to a new set of colleagues and neighbors to build friendships with.

Discover Where You Want to Live!
Traveling is a great way to try out destinations that you’re considering for fulltime residency.  Maybe you’ve always wanted to live in San Francisco or some other city; take an assignment there and see if it really is the place for you.

Earn Great Pay!
Travelers often make more money on travel assignments than they would working in a permanent position.  Many find it’s a great way to get ahead financially.

Do I have to get a license for every state I want to work in?

You need a current unencumbered state license for many states in which you work. Most states require a fee and verification of licensure in your home state. Some states participate in the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) and will accept your home state license without the need for a new license in their state. HealthOne recruiters can help you determine what you will need for a particular assignment.

What does Tax Advantage mean?

Travel nurses generally earn their income working away from home. If you have a permanent residence and also maintain a separate home (e.g. apartment, hotel/motel) where you live while you work and earn your living you are incurring duplicate expenses such as housing, meals, etc. The IRS recognizes that some people pay duplicate living expenses while making their living. They have established defined “per diem” or daily travel reimbursement rates that qualifying workers may receive. Per diem payments are not taxable and can be incorporated into Traveler compensation to maximize after-tax or “take-home” pay.

Here are some basic guidelines:

  1. You must have a permanent tax residence or tax home - a residence where you usually live and pay taxes. Without a tax home, the IRS would consider you an "itinerant worker" for tax purposes and therefore ineligible to deduct travel living expenses.
  2. Your permanent tax residence must be different from and at least 50 miles from the location of your travel assignment. You must live in your temporary housing location during your travel assignment; working near your tax home and returning there after work would disqualify you from the plan.
  3. Your travel assignment must be less than one year in length. You may have multiple travel assignments and extensions, but each original assignment must be less than a year.
  4. This is not an exhaustive list specific to your circumstances. You should consult a personal tax advisor familiar with per diem eligibility to determine whether or not you qualify. You may also find helpful information at the website of the IRS.
